San Antonio-based artist Ann Enzminger examines the physical and cultural aftermath of Hemisfair 1968 in I’ve Had an Out of Body Experience, a new exhibition exploring the neighborhood displaced to make way for the international exposition.

Conceived as a celebration of progress and international exchange, Hemisfair transformed downtown San Antonio while requiring the removal of an existing residential neighborhood and the displacement of its residents. Nearly six decades later, Enzminger revisits what was lost through a multidisciplinary body of work incorporating painting, fiber, mapping, and sculptural forms.

Rather than attempting to literally reconstruct the neighborhood, Enzminger uses fragments, repetition, accumulation, and tactile materials to consider how places persist through memory, documentation, and imagination. Maps function as both records and abstractions, while repeated forms suggest the persistence of what has been removed.

The exhibition also examines the strange afterlife of World's Fair architecture. Many of Hemisfair's structures were designed to be temporary, yet the consequences of the redevelopment that created them were lasting. The contrast raises questions about what cities choose to preserve, what they allow to disappear, and whose histories become part of the official narrative.

I’ve Had an Out of Body Experience offers a contemporary reconsideration of Hemisfair 1968 and the human landscape that existed before it, asking how art might make visible the people and places obscured by narratives of civic progress.
