Community Host
Housed in the beautifully restored Heidenheimer Building, Taylor’s Spark! exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to experience innovation inside a place that embodies it. Built in 1905 as a wholesale grocery warehouse, the historic brick building reflects Taylor’s early days as a thriving railroad and agricultural center. After decades of serving the community, the warehouse has been thoughtfully rehabilitated, preserving its historic character while adapting it for new purposes. Today, its soaring interior and industrial charm provide a fitting backdrop for Spark! Places of Innovation, demonstrating how historic places can continue to inspire creativity, connection, and new ideas for generations to come.

Taylor's Story of Innovation: 150 Years on the Brazos Trail
As a companion to the Smithsonian's Spark! Places of Innovation exhibition, this locally curated exhibit explores how innovation has shaped Taylor and the surrounding Brazos Trail Region for more than 150 years. While the Smithsonian highlights stories of rural ingenuity from across America, Taylor's exhibit brings that story home, showcasing the people, industries, and ideas that transformed a small railroad town into a thriving Central Texas community.
Visitors will journey through the evolution of transportation with a remarkable collection of historic vehicles, beginning with a beautifully preserved Studebaker horse-drawn carriage and continuing through the mechanical innovations of the early twentieth century, including a restored 1920s fire engine. Together, these artifacts illustrate how changing technology connected communities, improved public safety, and fueled economic growth.
The exhibit also commemorates Taylor's 150th anniversary, telling the story of a community built on determination, entrepreneurship, and innovation. From agriculture and commerce to education, industry, and civic leadership, visitors will discover the people and events that have shaped Taylor since its founding in 1876.
A centerpiece of the exhibit highlights the transformative impact of the International & Great Northern (I&GN) Railroad, whose arrival established Taylor as a major transportation hub and helped fuel the city's rise as one of Texas' leading cotton markets. Railroad artifacts, photographs, and an elegant table setting from the I&GN's famous Eagle passenger service offer a glimpse into the sophistication and importance of rail travel during its golden age while illustrating how the railroad connected Taylor to the rest of the nation.
The story extends beyond Taylor through exhibits and artifacts provided by communities across the Brazos Trail Region, each sharing its own story of ingenuity, resilience, and progress. These regional displays demonstrate how innovation has shaped towns throughout Central Texas and highlight the shared history that continues to unite the Brazos Trail.
By pairing local history with the Smithsonian's Spark! Places of Innovation exhibition, Taylor's Story of Innovation invites visitors to explore 150 years of creativity, industry, and community spirit, revealing how the innovations of yesterday continue to inspire the possibilities of tomorrow.
