MIDLAND, Texas — The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is hosting a solemn commemoration to honor the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 near the flagpole at the site, 1412 W. Ohio St.

All are invited to join this time of remembrance and reflection.

The commemoration will include a moment of silence, a reflection of why the day should be remembered, and readings from a journal of memories written by the home’s visitors from the past year. The journal will remain on permanent display at the home.

George W. Bush, who grew up in Midland at the home, was president of the United States at the time of the attacks.

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were lost when terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, crashing them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In the aftermath, President Bush provided the country with reassurance and leadership, rallying the American people and recognizing the heroism of first responders.

The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is one of 42 historic sites operated by the Texas Historical Commission. It is the family home of one of the country’s most prominent political families, including Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush, as well as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. The home, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is restored to the early 1950s and reflects the lives of the young family through exhibits and furnishings.
