The LYRIC Theater in Spearman, Texas, is one of the town’s oldest continually operating businesses, having been owned by only two families—the Hales and the Ellsworths.
Spearman’s movie history began with The Arcade in 1920, which was lost to fire in 1922. The second theater, The Rex, opened in 1927 and was later purchased by S.B. Hale, who renamed it The Lyric. After a fire destroyed Hale’s drugstore, he built a new theater, which his family operated until 1976.
In 1976, Alton and Peggy Ellsworth acquired the Lyric, continuing its legacy. The family has since managed the theater, renaming it LYRIC Cinema in 2001. Now in its 90th year, the Lyric remains a cherished community landmark.
