On April 1, 1886, the Salado Valley Cemetery Association was formally established when local citizens purchased a 4.1-acre "burying ground" from Nicholas and Elizabeth Ann Land for $131.65. The Lands had arrived in the area around 1862, acquiring 500 acres from Dr. George Rumsey, a pioneering physician who had settled at Corn Hill in 1851. This L-shaped tract, located two to three miles northwest of the village, encompassed a windy hill where burials had already begun in December 1863 with the interment of Nicholas and Elizabeth’s oldest son, John—the oldest known grave in the cemetery. Corn Hill itself, named by Judge John E. King for the surrounding cornfields, had served as a vital stagecoach stop and post office since the 1850s, becoming the social and economic hub for early settlers in the area. As Corn Hill thrived with farms, churches, lodges, and businesses through the late 19th century, the cemetery became a reflection of the community’s values, featuring gravestones adorned with angels, heavenly symbols, and emblems of the Woodmen of the World and Masonic orders. It holds approximately 225 identifiable graves plus dozens marked only by native stone slabs, including members of the Land family, Dr. Rumsey, and other foundational figures. The decline of Corn Hill after the 1909 arrival of the Bartlett-Florence Railway and the rise of nearby Jarrell shifted the region’s focus, yet the Land Cemetery endures as a quiet witness to Williamson County’s pioneer heritage. Today, it continues to serve as the final resting place for area families.
