The GEM Theatre’s history in Armstrong County dates back to 1915 with the opening of The Claudia Theatre, which initially hosted live performances before transitioning to films. Reviving this tradition, the Armstrong County Museum acquired and restored the building in 1992, renaming it The Gem Theatre. Now part of the Armstrong County Museum complex, the venue showcases an exhibit of vintage movie memorabilia and regularly hosts live performances by both local and touring theatrical and musical groups.

Film enthusiasts may also appreciate the theater's designation as a Texas Historical Site, recognizing its connection to the Oscar-winning 1963 Paul Newman film Hud. The Gem served as a filming location for a scene in which two characters watch an animated short, Clementine, and sing along to "Oh My Darlin' Clementine," adding to the film's authentic depiction of small-town Texas life.
