City Market in Luling opened in 1958 by two brothers - Howard and Lanos Ellis. The brothers had learned their trade from working at Kreuz Market before opening their business, and they ran it together until 1969. At that time, they transferred the daily operations over to Joe Capello who was a trusted employee.
Capello is still the pitmaster of City Market today and descendants of the Ellis brothers continue to own this family-run establishment.
City Market was designated a Texas Treasure Business in 2022.
