Citizens Memorial Garden Cemetery
Established in 1906, Citizens Memorial Garden Cemetery on Memorial Drive is the final resting place for generations of African American residents of Georgetown, with a western section reserved for Hispanic burials. Early interments likely included formerly enslaved individuals. Although the seven-acre cemetery appears sparsely marked—with 306 visible headstones—a 2013 study identified at least 511 unmarked graves, detected through ground depressions and earthen mounds. Many markers were likely lost due to deterioration or were never inscribed. A survey and interpretive sign, funded by the Texas Historical Commission and the City of Georgetown, document the cemetery’s history, map marked graves, and indicate unmarked burial sites. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2023. THC Atlas Number 7491002605
