LEVELLAND
Levelland, a Texas Main Street city, makes sure that visitors and residents alike know about the city’s achievements. Among Levelland’s Main Street accoutrements are seasonal banners, rotated throughout the year to announce citywide events; gateway signage at each of the four city entrances; and the installation of courthouse benches and pavers installed around the entrances to the Hockley County courthouse, centerpiece of Levelland and Hockley County seat. In addition, the city hosts a downtown historical walking tour each May in honor of National Preservation Month. Can’t make it to Levelland in May but still want to explore the walking tour? Each site is described on the city’s Chamber of Commerce website under “Main Street”.
Levelland has a lot of history to share despite the fact that by Texas standards it’s a fairly young community, surveyed in 1912 but developed beginning in 1921, the year the county organized. But the city wasted little time in advancing the interests of both the county and its residents. Today, Levelland hosts festivities and programs year-round designed to celebrate its history and feature its Main Street including Christmas on the Square and a summer concert series called “Sounds of Texas”.
