During the late 1800s and early 1900s Ellis County was the largest cotton-producing county in the U.S.—establishing prosperous cotton-related industries in the area as well a building boom, which can still be observed today in the wealth of local Victorian-era residences and—naturally—an outstanding courthouse.
Eventually, the architectural ambition of the courthouse spread out to the buildings around it, with privately owned storefronts and offices having picked up the energy of the courthouse, sometimes only in small details, but in ways that create a powerful sense of harmony for the entire town square.
