US 83 Bridge at the Salt Fork of the Red River
The 1939 truss bridge on US 83 crossing the Salt Fork of the Red River near Wellington, Texas, was the location of a near capture of Bonnie and Clyde, whose car plunged into the river on June 10, 1933. A Texas Historical Marker at the nearby county park relates the story.
The Parker through truss bridge, denoted CG0031-03-002, was designed and built by the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co. and the Texas Highway Department and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The truss bridge brings the two-lane-wide north-bound side of US 83 over the river; it presumably originally was the only bridge and carried one southbound and one northbound lane. In 2012 the cost of mitigation was deemed too high, and the bridge was demolished.
The nearby Route 203 truss bridge built at the same time as the US83 bridge was completely refurbished and still stands.
