Since 1958, the pink and black decor of the Malt Shop has stood on Highway 80 going east from Weatherford to Fort Worth, then the only highway linking the two cities. It was established on property owned by the Morris family, one of the early burger stops in the area and near the newly-built and filled Lake Weatherford.

The Morris family ran the business for less than a year, and then it changed hands several times until it was purchased and operated by Buddy Blackwell until 1964. In 1964, it was purchased by two women, sisters-in-law both named Mildred Lewis, who operated the business with very little advertising for almost 30 years, but had loyal employees and very loyal customers.

The Malt Shop continues today with its loyal customers who come regularly for burgers or homemade ice cream. The shop still has a "fifties" rock-n-roll theme on the outside with picnic tables, offering a moment of nostalgia when malt shops and burger joints were gathering spaces for the community.

The Malt Shop was designated a Texas Treasure Business in 2024.
