Opened in 1931 in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood, the Texas Theatre began as an elaborate atmospheric movie palace designed to transport audiences far beyond the everyday world. The theater entered national history on November 22, 1963, when Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested here for the murder of Officer J.D. Tippit in connection with President John F. Kennedy's assassination. After decades of change and a period of closure, the landmark theater was revived and reopened in 2010. Today, it remains a lively destination for classic, independent, and first-run films, along with concerts and special events.
