The Texas Panhandle has been home to herds of bison for thousands of years, from the extinct Bison antiquus to its modern-day descendant. The decline and near extinction of the great Southern Plains herd prompted George and MaryAnn Goodnight to nurture a small group on their ranch in what is now Caprock Canyons State Park. In the late 1990s, Texas Parks and Wildlife began to manage the descendants of these animals and the park now supports a breeding program working to maintain and strengthen the Texas State Bison Herd, the last of the Southern Plains buffalo.
