San Augustine Drug Co.
San Augustine Drug Co. was founded by pharmacist Alonzo Rushing & his brother Ace Rushing in 1904, though older prescriptions that were found in the pharmacy by later owners suggest that the drug store may be even older than originally thought.
Casey Jones, who began at the drug store as a soda jerk and apprenticed under Alonzo Rushing to receive his pharmacy license, eventually purchased the store sometime in the 1920s. Jones remained owner until 1965, when he sold the store to Therman Bridges. Later, Therman's daughter, Debbie, took over as owner and pharmacist.
In addition to its place as a community gathering spot, the historic drug store is beloved for a beverage that's been on the menu since 1928. The story goes that when former owner, Casey Jones, was still a soda jerk, he liked to mix different flavors together. The inevitable result was the Grapefruit Highball, a non-alcoholic drink, the recipe for which is known by only two people. For almost a century, the drink has been one of the most-asked-for drinks at the fountain and can still be ordered at the counter today.
