Old City Cemetery
Stephen Powers hailed from Maine, but he became an important figure in South Texas cattle ranching. A lawyer, he helped resolve land title disputes in contested area between the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers. His biggest claim to Texas cattle fame was his role as legal adviser to the cattle barons Richard King, Charles Stillman, and Mifflin Kenedy – arguably three of the biggest names in cattle at the time, and direct beneficiaries of the Chisholm Trail’s success. Powers is buried here, at Brownsville's Old City Cemetery.
With gravestones dating back to 1853, a stroll through the cemetery reveals much about Brownsville’s history – including the area’s rich cattle ranching heritage. Among those interred here are family members of the McAllen-Ballí and Yturria ranches.
