The business that would come to be known as Lane's on Austin Avenue was established in 1927 by Ethel and George H. Lane. Ethel was allowed to display and sell lamps, and a few other fixtures at a business in town called Texas Building and Materials, located at 1020 Austin Avenue. By 1928, the building was owned by Ethel's husband. He and Ethel established Lane's Interiors in connection with his electrical contracting business. Over time, it became more than an electric fixture store, offering furniture, kitchenware, and home decor.
