John Peter Tatsch House
Hill Country Trail Region
Master craftsman Johann Peter Tatsch brought his family to Fredericksburg from Germany in 1852. A carpenter and furniture maker who built this home using local stone, Tatsch completed all the woodwork by hand. The house is notable for its interior stairway and made famous by its enormous fireplace, often described as large enough to “roast an ox.” Tatsch lived here with his wife Maria Elizabeth and children Elizabeth, Sophie, Caroline, Wilhelmina, and Richard.
