This was the third Texas courthouse of twelve designed by W.C. Dodson. Six Dodson courthouses remain. This one, constructed of rusticated limestone with mansard and pyramidal roofs, emblematic of its Second Empire style, is arguably his grandest.

The first floor is roughly divided into quarters and houses county services. The second floor contains office space and the District Courtroom, which has an extra high ceiling opening up to the third floor balcony for extra seating.

The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Walk north on Waco Street, so named because it was originally the road that connected Hillsboro to Waco.
