James Riggs (1879 -1964) erected this building in the 1920s and opened a grocery store and meat market, which he and his wife Kate Niernberg Logan (1879 – 1946) operated. During the Depression (1929 -1939), the couple accepted trade for food and, according to one employee, “Mr. Riggs was like the neighborhood banker. He carried a wad of bills on him and loaned money to people who needed it”. Today the Helotes Gallery is the premier Art destination in Old Town Helotes, featuring over seventy Hill Country artists. The Gallery features a wide array of styles and mediums for you to enjoy while strolling through the Gallery. The Gallery's Grand Room features original sculptures, oil, and acrylic works of art. The North and South Rooms feature pottery, watercolors, glass art, and photography. Our Jewelry Room features handmade jewelry and wearable art. The Helotes Gallery offers white glove sales services, events, art classes, and in-home consulting. There are several ways to visit us, either online, during store hours, or by appointment.
