First Colored Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church)

Although the First Colored Baptist Church (now known as First Baptist Church) began as a slave congregation, it was officially organized after the Civil War in 1867 by the Rev. Jacob Fontaine, formerly enslaved. Today, the church is considered to be one of the oldest African American Baptist churches in Austin. The current building is the fourth home for this congregation.
