Although the First Colored Baptist Church (now known as First Baptist Church) began as a slave congregation, it was officially organized after the Civil War in 1867 by the Rev. Jacob Fontaine, a former slave. Today, the church is considered to be one of the oldest African American Baptist churches in Austin. The current building is the fourth home for this congregation.
