First Colored Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church)

Now known as First Baptist Church, the First Colored Baptist Church began as a slave congregation and is one of the oldest African American Baptist churches in Austin. It was officially organized after the Civil War in 1867 by the Rev. Jacob Fontaine, a former slave. Today, the church is considered to be one of the oldest African American Baptist churches in Austin. The current building is the fourth home for this congregation.
