Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1926 on a 30-acre parcel to serve Austin’s African American community. It has over 12,000 burials. When Evergreen Cemetery opened in 1926, it would parallel Austin City Hall’s efforts to force Black Austinites to leave Freedmen's communities like Clarksville, Wheatville and other neighborhoods and settle in one central place: East Austin.
