Known as the "Father of Texas Journalism", Colonel Charles DeMorse founded The Northern Standard, participated in the Civil War and was the first president of Texas Press and Editorial Association. His 1833 home is the oldest in the city. The home is a recorded Texas Historical Landmark, received a 1936 Texas Centennial Award marker and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Exterior restoration has been completed, and funds are being raised to complete the interior.
