For generations of moviegoers in the Rio Grande Valley, Cine El Rey was more than a place to catch a film. Opened in 1947 to serve McAllen’s Hispanic community, the theater became a showcase for Spanish-language cinema and welcomed celebrated Mexican performers during the golden age of Mexican film. At a time when Hispanic patrons could face segregation or exclusion at other theaters, El Rey offered a gathering place where Mexican and Mexican American culture took center stage. Today, the restored theater continues its entertainment tradition as a venue for live performances, films, comedy, and community events.
