When Mexican General Santa Anna was captured in 1836 after the Battle of San Jacinto, he was escorted to nearby Velasco, site of the Texas Republic’s provisional government. This chapter of Brazoria Country’s revolutionary history is celebrated at the annual “Santa Anna Heritage Ball” – a reenactment of the historic dances that took place in Brazoria in 1834. Attendees to the ball dress in period costumes for dancing, dinner and revelry.
The Brazoria County Historical Museum includes exhibits about Brazoria’s role during the Revolutionary period. Learn about the enslaved people who worked the cotton and sugarcane fields, and made plantation owners some of the wealthiest people in Texas.Nearby in the Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park, don’t miss the statue of Stephen F. Austin, the most famous resident of Brazoria County and the “Father of Texas.”
