Cattle drovers, Hollywood stars and English gardens? Find them all in picturesque Weatherford. Start at the Second Empire-style 1886 Parker County Courthouse in the heart of a lively downtown square with boutique shops and restaurants. A historic driving tour takes you past Victorian, Queen Anne and Greek Revival homes, including one where Hollywood star Mary Martin and TV star son Larry Hagman lived. At Greenwood Cemetery visit the graves of trail drovers Oliver Loving and Boze Ikard, whose stories inspired Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. Stories of cattlemen and screen stars get top billing at the 23,000-square-foot Doss Heritage & Culture Center. The history and art museum also displays extensive Native American artifacts and hosts concerts and educational programs. The story of many indigenous peoples, from Inuit to Aztecs, unfolds downtown at the Museum of the Americas. Nature lovers flock to Chandor Gardens. Built in the 1930s by famed English portrait artist Douglas Chandor, the 3.5-acre garden blends formal English gardens with ornate Chinese architecture.
