It’s difficult to separate the identity of College Station from that of Texas A&M University. The city’s name alone signifies its origin, selected as a site in 1871 for the location of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, formed in 1876 as precursor to today’s University. The first post office for the community, established to serve the college, opened near the Houston and Texas Central Railway tracks and, requiring a name, was given the most obvious – “College Station”. The community arose around the college, particularly after an electric interurban railway linked College Station with nearby Bryan in 1910, an innovative idea that was replaced by a bus system ten years later. The college grew, transforming into a formidable university known for its research, academic excellence, and its unique corps of cadets. College Station flourished along with it. Today, the city offers first-class museums including the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries, and the Corp of Cadets Center where a vast antique firearms collection highlights 19th century Colt pistols and early flintlock revolvers.
