Drive the high rolling hills of Hemphill County and experience the same vistas seen by Native Americans hunting bison, Spanish explorers seeking treasure and American adventurists bound for California’s gold fields. Once you reach the Canadian River, the quaint county seat of Canadian quenches your thirst for history at the River Valley Pioneer Museum. Artifact-rich exhibits take you from prehistoric archeology to early ranching to railroading and oil boom eras. A key exhibit chronicles the dramatic 1874 siege known as the Battle of Buffalo Wallow. Outnumbered buffalo hunters battled Comanche and Kiowa warriors in the longest battle of the Red River War. Displays show weapons and bullets from both sides, as well as wagon train supplies found at the site. Stroll through Canadian’s bustling downtown, past the restored Palace Theater and the Renaissance-style county courthouse, both built in 1909. Enjoy fine art and architecture at The Citadelle, housed in a landmark 1910 church. Stroll the 1916 Canadian River Wagon Bridge, now part of a half-mile hiking trail across the Canadian River. The Canadian Visitors’ Center provides information on dining and lodging in historic structures, as well as local events, including one of the state’s oldest rodeos.
Canadian boasts a state cultural district designated by the Texas Commission on the Arts. Explore all they have to offer on your next visit!
