Roads of Memory: Exploring Asian American Heritage Across Texas
It’s a balmy May afternoon in Houston. Instead of rushing through weekend errands, you sit barefoot in quiet meditation. The scent of incense drifts through the air as you focus on your breath and the cool surface of a temple floor beneath you. It’s not the Texas many travelers expect, but across Texas's major cities, spaces like this reflect the state’s evolving tapestry of Asian cultures, from Indian and Vietnamese to Chinese and Filipino.
Yet this presence is far from new. Generations of Asian and Asian American communities have shaped Texas, from early Chinese settlers in El Paso to Japanese farmers who helped transform agriculture along the Gulf Coast.
Preserving El Paso's Chinese Legacy
Chinatown's history had long faded from public memory, but El Paso native and muralist, Babak Tavakoli, is one of many keeping the Chinese community's legacy at the fore of El Paso's dynamic history with his work, 'Lost on the Iron Road,' stating,
“It is an important part of El Paso’s history. I wanted to create a piece that venerated the Chinese railroad workers’ contribution to our city...to interpret the strength, courage, and drive that were characteristics of these early El Pasoans.”
