Day 1 — Alpine → Fort Davis
Breakfast
Start the morning at Magoo’s Place for coffee, traditional breakfast, huevos rancheros and breakfast tacos before heading out.
Morning Attraction
Spend the morning exploring Fort Davis National Historic Site — one of the best-preserved frontier military forts in the Southwest. Explore officer quarters, barracks, wagon trails, and learn about Buffalo Soldiers and frontier life.
Afternoon Attraction
Drive the scenic loop through Davis Mountains State Park and stop at historic Indian Lodge, a beautiful adobe-style lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Families can explore the grounds, enjoy the mountain scenery, and learn a little about the CCC’s impact on Far West Texas.
The park also offers easy hiking trails, bird watching areas, and scenic picnic spots.
Lodging Options
The Alpine/Big Bend area has some historic hotels that are perfect for any traveler. Inventory is very limited in the Summer, however, so it's best to call ahead for reservations.
In Alpine, choose either the Holland Hotel or the Maverick Inn. For a high-end experience, try the Gage Hotel in Marathon. If historic hotels aren't your cup of tea, the Alpine area also has vacation rentals and chain hotel properties.
Day 2 — Alpine → Big Bend National Park
Breakfast
Start the morning at Scoops Coffee & Pastries with coffee, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches.
Lunch
Head south towards Big Bend National Park and grab lunch before entering the park at DB's Rustic Iron BBQ in Terlingua Ghost Town or pick up picnic supplies at Cottonwood General Store in Study Butte.
Afternoon Attraction
Head into Big Bend National Park and visit the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, an outdoor interpretive site that highlights the prehistoric world of Big Bend. Families can see giant fossil replicas, learn about dinosaurs and ancient sea creatures that once lived here, and explore exhibits designed especially for curious kids and science lovers.
If time allows, continue on to scenic overlooks or short walks nearby such as Dugout Wells or Panther Junction.
Other Things To Do If Time Allows
McDonald Observatory
In addition to the evening Star Parties, the observatory also offers daytime solar viewing programs and guided tours of the giant research telescopes. It’s one of the most unique science attractions in Texas and a perfect fit for families visiting Far West Texas.
Wassermann Wranch
A favorite Alpine stop for families and animal lovers, Wassermann Wranch is known for its camel encounters, exotic animals, and quirky West Texas charm. It’s a fun and unexpected roadside attraction that kids especially enjoy
Kokernot Field
Catch an Alpine Cowboys baseball game at historic Kokernot Field, often called the “Yankee Stadium of Texas.” Built in 1947, it’s one of the oldest continuously operating baseball parks in the country and a great summer evening activity.
Post Park and Gage Gardens
If traveling through Marathon, these peaceful spots make a great break from the road. Post Park offers shaded picnic areas, while Gage Gardens features beautiful landscaping and desert plants near the historic Gage Hotel.
