San Marcos' story is a layered one of many cultures that have settled next to the Springs. The earliest human residents of what is now San Marcos arrived ten to twelve-thousand years ago—members of a prehistoric Clovis culture—followed by American Indian, Spanish, Mexican, African American, and Anglo settlers, who arrived on foot or by boat, train, or automobile. Local preservation efforts have embraced the contributions of these cultures, which are on display at destinations throughout town.
