Get to Know Georgetown

Early American and Swedish pioneers in the 1800s were attracted to the many amenities of Georgetown: an abundance of timber, fertile land, and clear water. The settlers farmed successfully—mostly cotton—and also profited from the cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail, which cut right through town on its way to Kansas.

The town square was the place to see and be seen in the early part of the 20th century. But as the century crept on, modernization crept in. Beautiful storefronts were sometimes covered over with aluminum, stucco, or brick—hiding or destroying the beautiful Victorian pressed metal....until the 1970s, when community members realized that no one was going to save their historic downtown but themselves.
