Waylon Jennings (1937-2002) was a Littlefield, Texas, born country music artist who became a leading figure in the outlaw country movement of the 1970s. After briefly playing bass for Buddy Holly in 1959, Jennings later moved to Nashville and recorded for RCA Records before challenging the polished Nashville sound and demanding creative control over his music.
His independent approach helped shape outlaw country alongside artists such as Willie Nelson and influenced generations of country musicians.
Jennings helped lead the Outlaw Country movement, giving artists creative control over their music and permanently changing the sound, image, and independence of modern country music.
Jennings was known for his signature outlaw country sound built on a steady rhythm section, prominent Telecaster guitar, and his deep commanding baritone, paired with a rugged independent style that rejected the polished Nashville sound.

Jennings was supposed to be on the plane that crashed in the 1959 tragedy known as The Day the Music Died, but he gave his seat to J. P. Richardson, who was sick with the flu.
