Hailing from Slaton, Bobby Keys is considered one of the greatest rock n’ roll saxophonists of all time. At 10, seeing Buddy Holly in concert planted the seed for his storied career. A self-taught musician, he’d later join forces with other musical luminaries including the Rolling Stones, John Lennon, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, and Sheryl Crow.
Bobby Keys’ mastery of the tenor saxophone didn’t just complement songs. It punctuated and brought to life some of the most iconic and recognizable hits of the 1960s and 1970s, transforming great tracks into unforgettable ones. His contributions often acted as sonic exclamation points, elevating choruses, bridging sections, or delivering concise solos that resonated deeply with listeners and remain timeless.
The bombastic, gritty saxophone tone of Bobby Keys stands as a vivid embodiment of something unmistakably Texan: authentic, rambunctious, and overflowing with swagger. His sound is steeped in a rich musical crossroads where blues, country, R&B, and early rock n’ roll converge, creating a style that feels both rooted and rebellious.

Bobby Keys and his friend, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, share the same birthday: December 18, 1943. Keys first met the band at the San Antonio Teen Fair during their 1964 U.S. tour, and 50 years later, joined them for their ’14 On Fire’ tour, cementing his place as an unofficial member of the Rolling Stones. Keys also released a 2012 memoir, Every Night's a Saturday Night: The Rock 'n' Roll Life of Legendary Sax Man Bobby Keys.
