FAQ
Before you gas up and go, take a peek at these FAQs. They cover the practical stuff - maps, trip-planning tools, events, and other practical tips - so you can spend less time wondering and more time exploring Texas heritage.
About the Texas Heritage Trails Program
Q: Are the Texas Heritage Trails walking or hiking trails?
A: No. The Texas Heritage Trails - originally called the Texas Travel Trails - were created in 1968 for San Antonio’s World’s Fair, HemisFair. Governor John Connally wanted visitors to explore more of Texas beyond San Antonio, so the trails were designed as themed driving routes that connect travelers with historic sites across the state. Today those original driving trails have been transformed into regions, which means there is even more for visitors to explore!
Q: Okay, but ARE there places where we can hike?
A: Of course! Texas is blessed with many places for hiking, walking, and cycling. Start with our Texas State Parks and natural areas, and the national parks, preserves, recreation areas, and forests that are found all over the state. Then look locally for regional, county, and city parks. So many of them are known for their beautiful and well-maintained trail systems.
Trip Planning Basics
Q: How do I plan a heritage road trip in Texas using TexasTimeTravel.com?
A: Start by exploring our Heritage Trail Regions. Each one highlights historic towns, museums, and cultural stops. You can browse regional events and read some fun and informative blog posts. Once you’ve picked a trail, use the interactive map to find sites, events, and nearby amenities, then build your own custom trip.
Q: Do I need to book tours or make reservations in advance?
A: It’s always a good idea to check ahead and, if needed, make a reservation for guided tours. Better safe than sorry! Larger museums and sites usually welcome walk-in visitors, but smaller historic sites or community museums may have limited hours or rely on volunteers. Use the contact information provided for each site to check on hours of operation, admission fees, and tour schedules.
Visitor Information
Q: Are the sites free to visit, or do they require admission fees?
A: Some sites are free, like historic courthouses and downtown walking tours. Others — such as museums or state historic sites — may have a small admission fee. We recommend checking each site’s page for details before you go. TexasTimeTravel.com staff do not maintain information on hours, but always provide a link, phone number, or email address to the site for your convenience.
Q: What are typical opening hours for historic sites, museums, and attractions?
A: Hours vary by location. Smaller or volunteer-run museums may have limited schedules, so it’s always a good idea to check each site’s page or call ahead before you visit. TexasTimeTravel.com staff do not maintain information on hours, but always provide a link, phone number, or email address to the site for your convenience.
Q: Do you recommend heritage accommodations (historic hotels, B&Bs, etc.)?
A: Absolutely! Staying in a historic inn, landmark hotel, or restored bed-and-breakfast is one of the best ways to experience Texas heritage firsthand. Check out our page on Historic Lodging for more information.
Q: Where can I find places to eat along the heritage trails?
A: Each Heritage Trail Region features locally loved cafés, barbecue joints, diners, and bakeries. You can also find lots of recommendations on our Historic Businesses page. It features Texas Treasure Businesses Award recipients (they've been in business more than 50 years!) that are historic restaurants, retail stores, entertainment options, and lodging. You'll spot many of these on our regional pages, but the best discoveries often come from a friendly local recommendation once you’re on the road.
Accessibility and Transportation
Q: What’s the best way to get around? Do I need a car?
A: Texas is big - really big. A car is the easiest way to explore the Texas Heritage Trail Regions. The highways and backroads are part of the fun, and there are plenty of small-town stops along the way.
Q: Are the original heritage trails marked with road signs?
A: Yes! There are still over 10,000 blue and white “Texas Heritage Trail” signs along highways and roads to help you follow the routes. Keep your eye out - they’re your guideposts to history.
Q: Are the sites accessible for visitors with disabilities?
A: Many museums and historic sites have ADA access, but historic buildings can sometimes be a challenge. When in doubt, call ahead. Most sites are happy to answer accessibility questions.
Events and Seasons
Q: What’s the best time of year for a heritage road trip?
A: Anytime is a good time to hit the road in Texas! Spring and fall bring cooler weather and lots of festivals, while summer is great for pairing historic sites with water activities. Winter is perfect for cozy small-town getaways and holiday heritage events.
Q: How can I find events happening during my visit?
A: Visit the Events section on our site. It’s updated regularly with festivals, tours, and seasonal heritage happenings across Texas.
Digital and On-the-Go Tools
Q: Is there a TexasTimeTravel mobile app?
A: We don’t have a standalone app, but the website is mobile-friendly. You can pull it up on your phone or tablet while you’re on the road. However, we DO have mobile tours! Our mobile tours help you explore Texas by topic and by state historic site. Visit our Texas TIme Travel Mobile Tours microsite and hit the road!
Q: Can I build my own itinerary?
A: Yes! Browse our website for heritage sites and attractions, events, and more. Find things that pique your interest, and click the red star icon next to the item. See them in the trip planner
Q: What if I don’t have cell service in rural areas?
A: It happens - especially in remote parts of Texas. We suggest downloading maps ahead of time, printing directions, or taking screenshots of your itinerary so you’re covered if service drops.
Practical Matters
Q: Is TexasTimeTravel.com managed by the State of Texas?
A: Yes. TexasTimeTravel.com is an initiative of the Texas Historical Commission (THC), and is designed to help travelers explore the state’s rich history and culture.
