We celebrate the 135th anniversary of Martinů’s birth with a program of compositions from two important periods of his life, his pre-WWII years in Paris and years in the United States. Characterized by an optimistic spirit and rhythmic vitality, Martinů’s chamber music is as fresh today as it was when it was first heard, almost a century ago. What a fun way to celebrate the maestro’s 135th birthday!

Among the most prolific Czech composers, Bohuslav Martinů gained renown through his symphonic compositions during World War II after escaping Europe and fleeing to the United States. Throughout his life, he composed chamber music for a diverse array of ensembles.

Performers on this program include members of the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, and music faculty members from the University of Houston, the University of Kansas, and Sam Houston State.
