In 1835, Gonzales defied the Mexican Army by hiding a cannon they were ordered to return, using it instead to fire the first shot of the Texas Revolution with the bold challenge "Come and Take It." This ignited the Texas independence movement and earned Gonzales the nickname "The Lexington of Texas."
