The Washington County Historical Commission was recently approved for a historical marker commemorating a speech given by Sam Houston in Brenham on March 31, 1861. Houston was on his way home after being deposed as governor for refusing to swear allegiance to the new Confederate government. As a part of the Smithsonian' Museum on Main Street exhibit that is currently in Brenham, we are partnering with the City of Brenham to produce a reenactment of that speech. There will be descendants of Sam Houston in the audience, as well as city and county officials and supporters of the commission.
