Resaca de la Palma State Park
Tropical Trail Region
Resaca de la Palma State Park in Brownsville is steeped in military history. Fort Brown in the Lower Rio Grande Valley was a major hub for Buffalo Soldiers, like the 9th Cavalry and 24th and 25th Infantry, from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. While the park marks the location of an earlier battle, Buffalo Soldiers later patrolled these resacas and dense brush, secured the border, protected local inhabitants, and handled tricky international situations. This historically important area is now a haven for birds and wildlife.
