When entering the park, a path leads visitors through 18 brass placards that commemorate American sacrifices in battle from Civil War to the present. Inlaid in the walkway are spaces for 8,000 pavers to personalize those who have honorably served our country and will continue to serve in the future. More than 1,100 are honored in this way today. An eternal flame is centered in the park to signify that sacrifice is the price we must pay for eternal vigilance and the defence of our freedoms. The park was planned, designed, managed and completed solely by veterans of Wise County and the generous contributions of its patriotic citizens.
