Many important landings happened in this harbor that shaped the course of Texas history: from Stephen F. Austin and the first ship of American settlers, to the arrival of the “Twin Sisters” – the famous cannons that came ashore here and helped win the Battle of San Jacinto.

The Surfside Historical Museum is located on the top floor of the Surfside Beach Village Hall. Visitors can explore a substantial collection of Independence era replicas and artifacts, including period clothing, weapons, and nautical equipment. A monument outside commemorates the Battle of Velasco in June 1832, one of the first outbreaks of violence between Texian colonists and the Mexican Army.
