Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site
Independence Trail Region
Varner-Hogg Plantation tells the story of more than a century of Texas history, from its early days as a sugar plantation worked by enslaved people to its later role in the state’s oil boom. After the Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers were among the military forces tasked with protecting freed African Americans and keeping stability during Reconstruction. Although there is no direct record of Buffalo Soldiers at the plantation, their service in surrounding counties forms part of the broader story of emancipation, labor, and resilience in Texas’s postwar landscape.
