El Camino Real de los Tejas passed near what is now Tyler State Park, making the area a critical route for both civilian and military travel. Buffalo Soldiers traveled these routes as they moved between posts, escorted supplies, or returned home from service. When you visit the Tyler State Park today, consider the early efforts of these soldiers who laid some of the groundwork for the region’s future. The park is known for its beautiful 64-acre spring-fed lake, trails through towering pine trees, and historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
