The Fulton School House

Tropical Trail Region

Fulton, a coastal town neighboring Rockport in Aransas County, was established in 1866 and named after its founder, George Ware Fulton Sr.

By the mid-1880s, Fulton’s population grew to 175 and was dotted with a beef-canning plant, a post office, several churches, and eventually, a one-room school. The Fulton School House opened in 1886, providing an educational learning environment for students between grades 1 through 6 who were taught by two teachers. After grade 6, students attended Aransas County public schools. The schoolhouse faced severe damage after a hurricane hit the Aransas Bay area in 1945. It was rebuilt and moved to its current location on 7th St. in Fulton. In the mid-1950s, Aransas County schools were consolidated, becoming Aransas County ISD. Fulton Elementary opened in 1956, leaving the schoolhouse empty.

A few years after the schoolhouse closed, the building became Fulton Town Hall, a space for town council meetings and public events. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas became custodians of the building and transformed it into a museum. Visitors can view a variety of vintage school desks, books, switches, and photographs. Other memorabilia that showcases the history of Fulton is on display as well. Currently, the museum is maintained by the Town of Fulton.
