Texas State Library and Archives Commission
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has been serving the people of Texas for more than a century. Since 1909, when the state founded the agency, we have been supporting the reading, learning, and historical preservation needs of Texas and its people.
Named a National Literary Landmark, the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building is the agency’s flagship located directly east of the Texas Capitol. View the six flags flown over Texas, our six Texas seal mosaics, the panoramic Texas history mural in our lobby, and our Texas history exhibits. Conduct research at our Reference Reading Room and our Archives Research Room.
Public service hours in the Archives and Reference Reading Rooms and lobby exhibit are 9:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Appointments to use archival materials are encouraged but not required. Library materials and public computers with internet access are available in the Reference Reading Room without an appointment. TSLAC regularly exhibits treasures from its collections in the lobby of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building. We encourage you to visit to see these pieces of history for yourself. Of course, we understand that not everyone is able to stop by 1201 Brazos Street in Austin, so we’ve digitized most of what we display for you to view online: www.tsl.texas.gov/lobbyexhibits.
We offer tours for audiences of all ages at no charge. A tour of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building encompasses a general overview of TSLAC and its functions with visits to the public service areas. To schedule a tour, complete the online tour request form at least two weeks in advance of the date you would like to visit: www.tsl.texas.gov/tourtslac.
