Texas State Cemetery

The 18-acre Texas State Cemetery in Austin is the final resting place of some of Texas’s most notable sons and daughters. Efforts to establish the cemetery began in 1851, with the death and burial of General Edward Burleson, a soldier and statesman who served with Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto, as Vice President of the Texas Republic, and as a state Congressman. In 1854 the State of Texas purchased a monument in his honor at this site, which eventually became the State Cemetery.
Today, the cemetery contains graves that include some of the most prominent persons from the Texas Revolutionary period.
