Dallas’ oldest Freedmen’s Community is the root of the Tenth Street Historic District, now home to many examples of Craftsman, Victorian, and especially interesting examples of folk architecture, including shotgun, double shotgun, L-plan, and camelback plan houses. This is one of the few remaining freedmen's towns in the South that still retains a significant amount of its original construction. Most of these dwellings were built prior to World War II, although a few date to the 1890s.
