Adolphus Sterne was one of the earliest and most influential Germans to live in Texas. From his Nacogdoches store, the multi-lingual Sterne sold goods to Mexican soldiers – and a growing Anglo population. During Texas’s fight for independence, Sterne used his store to smuggle munitions and food to Texian fighters – landing him in a Mexican jail. He was eventually pardoned, and when he returned to Nacogdoches, he grew his mercantile business into one of the state’s most profitable.

The home Sterne built on Lanana Creek in 1828 is one of the few structures still standing from pre-revolutionary days in Texas. Today, the Sterne-Hoya House Museum & Library tells the story of the man who built the home with period antiques and furnishings – including one of Texas’s earliest wine cellars.
