Star of the Republic Museum

It was early 1836, and Texan revolutionaries had been massacred at Goliad, and the Alamo has fallen. Santa Anna was moving his massive army across Texas, threatening everything in its path. Sam Houston’s army was in full retreat, and Texan families were on the run. The von Roeders and Klebergs – two families connected by marriage – held a family meeting to determine whether they’d escape to the northern states or stay and fight for Texas. They decided to fight. Louis von Roeder and Robert Justus Kleberg joined Sam Houston’s army at San Jacinto – the decisive final battle that gave Texas its independence.
The first floor of the Star of the Republic Museum provides a chronological history of early Texas, from American Indians to European explorers, to settlers and colonists, to the soldiers and patriots who fought for Texan independence – including German-Texans.
